It all started in the late 1800’s when railroad tracks were built through the center of Long Island. Ronkonkoma’s Hermanville and then Lakeland Stations became a central transit point for NYC travelers.
Maude Adams, a famous broadway actor best know for her starring role in Peter Pan who lived in Ronkonkoma in the 1920’s, planted hedges and had many aesthetic improvements made to the train station. She saw the value for the community. Ronkonkoma also had the first road built for automboiles starting with Ford Model T Cars in 1910. A toll booth was placed on Motor Parkway near Rosevale Avenue.
In the 1960’s the Long Island Expressway went right though our towns creating exits, 59 and 60.
Today, just about 100 years later, Construction, Plans and Proposals are in the works for a modern Ronkonkoma Train Station, Station Yards (Hub), Midway Crossing – A Bio Sciences corridor being linked with Brookhaven National Labs and a New North Side Terminal for Long Island MacArthur Airport attached to these projects are in the planning stages as well. This modern multi town Development will become Long Island’s and possibly the nation’s largest complete Transit Oriented development (TOD).
We are creating a multi article series this spring & summer covering each project individually. Follow My Ronkonkoma on Facebook to be sure you are up to date.

We had a brief sunset recently that exploded the sky with pinks and red tones, It must have lasted 4 minutes. I was able to grab a pic on my way home from work with no time to reach the lake…
I posted the roadside pic and within an hour, dozens of us shared their exact timed pics on the same post wherever they were in those 4 minutes. We all shared in our moment of amazement together. “As local as it gets“.
